1962 Citroen AZ

1962 Citroen 2cv AZ, or at least that’s what it said on the title but when I went to look at it, it was a different body, more from 1963..

I had seen this car for sale online for a few weeks already and it was still there. Actually the ad was for two 2cvs. Both of them in a very bad state, half covered in thorn bushes..

Both of them were for sale for 300 € so after a few weeks I decided to give it a try. I had only finished restoring my red 2cv 2 months earlier and to be honest, I didn’t think when I started it that I would be restoring another one so soon if ever but I enjoyed it very much and decided that it could become a good hobby so I called the guy.

The cars were located 250 km away from my place so I enjoyed some free time on the 31st of December to drive up there and have a look at the cars..

Then I got there, I realized that the pictures weren’t lying, the two cars were completely covered in thorn bushes in the depth of a humid valley. Some of these bushes had even grown around the engine. I decided to buy the two cars and we agreed that the guy would call me when he had taken them out of the jungle where they were and brought them close to the road for me to load them. The guy had an excavator and told me he would help me load them on my trailer when I come for them..

During the following two months, I called the guy several times to ask whether the cars were ready to pick up and each time, either the cars were not ready, it was snowing, the guy was in Africa for work etc… there was always a reason for me not to go pick up the cars. Up to the point where I was starting to think that I would not get them..

But I guess I ended up annoying the guy so much with my phone calls that he eventually dug the two cars out of where they had spent the last few years and brought them close to the road. Both cars hadn’t run for over 30 years..

Anyway, on the 14th of February, I took my trailer at 5 am and drove up to pick up the first car. My trailer could only carry one car so I was going to have to drive there twice on the same day. It took me 3 hours to get there and when I arrived, I could see both cars on the side of the road. They were looking pretty bad but for 150 € each, I was still getting a good deal. I decided to take the 1962 first as it was the one that I wanted to start restoring first. The other one was a grey 1965 AZAM model which has never really appealed to me but I thought I could restore it cheaply and sell it back to fund another restoration later on. I actually ended up getting married in this one but this is another story :). .

When I met the guy next to the cars, the first thing he did was to ask me if I had anything to load the cars onto my trailer to which I said no since he had told me he had everything to do that for me. He seemed annoyed but I couldn’t really care less. I asked him to bring his excavator and told him that if we managed to raise the front of the car enough to put the front wheels on top of the trailer, then we would just need to raise the rear and push it all the way on the trailer. We did that and after a few minutes of pushing carefully, the car was in place and I was ready to tie it down..

Then started the 3 hour trip back home during which I was already thinking about what I was going to do with this car. I knew it was a 1962 but the body on it was from a later model probably because of an accident. I decided I was going to restore it to what it used to be which meant a few modifications to the body so that the rear register plate would be compliant with the model, the speedometer would be of the right model and so on….

On the way, I lost the boot door and the rear window which I only noticed when I arrived. I got lucky it didn’t hurt anyone but although I looked on the way back for the second car, these two parts were never to be found again. I was going to have to find replacements for them..

When I got home, I untied the car quickly, took the forklift and got the 2cv off the trailer in less time than it takes to write it here. Then I got a quick lunch and drove off again to pick up the second car….

I let you watch the video of the restoration of this car. And if you enjoy it, please click on the thumbs up button, comment and subscribe to the channel. I try to release a new classic car video three times a week on Youtube and all the support is appreciated.
